Osteoporosis Meds Cause Fractures

Hello Everyone,

Today will be short, yesterday we were talking about meds being pulled from the market.  The whole point of the last few days is for us to take daily action to live a healthy lifestyle to prevent those conditions that we can prevent.

That way, hopefully, we will never become dependent on medications.

Today just a quick ironic example of why you don’t want to become dependent on chemicals for health…so it turns out that the medication that was suppose to limit fractures from osteoporosis actually causes an increase in fractures.

If you are taking Fosomax, Fosomax Plus D, Actonel, Actonel with Calcium, Boniva, Atelvia, or their generic versions, you may want to give contact your doctor to see if you should stop.  This may be one of those cases where the side effect may be worse than the original problem.

Just another example where a pill cannot solve our problems.

So I promised this to be a short email….shoot me an email back if you have any questions.

Darvocet Pulled From The Market

Hello Everyone,

Yesterday I talked about the dangers of prescription medications and how it would be so much more beneficial to lead a healthy lifestyle to avoid the potential side effects of medications.

Let me say again…. I am not a medication nazi…I do believe that there is a time and a place for medications…. the example that I gave yesterday was my wife Kelly and her asthma, I would not want her to be caught without her inhaler.

Well, another pain medicine has been pulled off of the market by the FDA.  It was actually pulled back in November, the popular pain reliever called  Darvocet.

Apparently it has been causing heart arrhthmias that can be fatal!

I guess that is one way to relieve pain…right?

Unfortunately, this is just another story in the big book of harmful medications….this was a more common mild to moderate pain medications but well known among pain specialists to be ineffective in pain management.  Well, apparently the risk associated with Darvocet outweighs the benefits.

I know that in life, it can be easier to pop a pill and hope it helps, but uscin conservative treatments such as Chiropractic and Massage Therapy should definately be given consideration…honestly…they are more effective without the side effects.

See you tomorrow,

Don’t Become A Statistic….Start Today

Hello Everyone,

Today I would like to talk about a problem that is totally preventable that every single one of you will experience….unless you decide now to prevent it.

This problem is one that leads to over 100,000 deaths per year.

Again, for the most part, this problem is totally preventable.

Ok, ok, so what is this big problem?  Here it is…..the drum roll please….

Over use of prescription medications!

Did you know that at least 100,000 patients die each year from medical error?  This is the number (and I feel it is a very conservative number) of patients who were given the “correct” treatment, at the “correct” time, for the “correct” diagnosis…and still died.

Why is this?

It is critical that you understand that all medications, whether over the counter or prescription are in fact chemicals.  And when you put a chemical into your body, there will be a chemical response.  That is the whole purpose, to cause a chemical reaction.  It is called betterliving through chemistry.

But lets look at what is really going on, when you take a pill to supress a symptom, what you are doing is overriding your body’s natural defense mechanisms.  In the majority of cases, a symptom is a warning sign that something is off and not working right, and when you suppress the symptoms (yes even cold symptoms) through the use of chemistry, you do cause damage to the human body.

Now there is a time and a place for medication…. I am not a medication nazi…just as an example, my wife has asthma, and I would never want her to be without her inhaler.  There are times that  medication can be lifesaving….but there are times when lifestyle changes and nutritional changes can in fact address the cause of your health issue, repair your malfunctioning body, and add quality of life to your years.

So what do you do?

Well, first of all….start focusing on the lifestyle factors:

1.  Regular appropriate exercise.
2.  Follow a proper primarily whole food diet
3.  Get plenty of sleep
4.  Maintain a positive mental attitude and manage your stress
5.  Keep your nervous system functioning with regular chiropractic adjustments…even if you are not in pain.

If you do the above, you will build the body’s natural strength and be able to lead a life of health and vitality.  If you have any questions, please call our office at 850-862-2224.

I would like to end with some data from “Generation Rx How Prescription Drugs Are Altering American Lives, Minds, and Bodies” (Greg Critser, Houghton Mifflin Company, 2005, Page 2)

American Prescription Drug Use:
“The average number of prescriptions [drugs] per
person, annually, in 1993 was seven.

The average number of prescriptions [drugs] per
person, annually, in 2000 was eleven.

[The average number of prescriptions drugs per
person], annually, in 2004 was twelve.

The total number of annual prescriptions [drugs] in
the United States now stands at about 3 billion.

The cost per year is about $180 billion, headed to an
estimated $414 billion by 2011.

Pretty soon, you are talking real money.”

So today try to figure out what you can do in each of the above lifestyle categories to prevent yourself from becoming another statistic.

Have a great day!

Am I The Right Chiropractor For You?

So there can be a lot of confusion in the market place about who is the right Chiropractic Physician to go to in order to meet your healthcare needs.  Well, today I am going to try to explain the general differences in most Chiropractors and then let you decide who is right for you.

Basically there are two schools of thought in Chiropractic.  I am very well versed in both schools of thought because when I went to Chiropractic School, I spent 1/2 of my education learning from a highly traditional school and curriculum and then I finished my education in a school that was more the medical way of looking at things.  With such a diversity in my educational paradigms, I feel that I got the best of both worlds and have been able to find the balance in the best way to serve our patients.  I will give you general descriptions of either end of the spectrum.  Understand that most Doctors of Chiropractic fall somewhere in between these paradigms, but this will give you a decent understanding.

The first school of thought that I would like to discuss is the doctors of Chiropractic who feel that we are only musculoskeletal specialists.  In otherwords, the way that Chiropractic Physicians fit into the healthcare world is in a drug free way to relieve neck pain and low back pain.  The doctors who follow this paradigm will typically operate what is called a treat and release practice.  In other words, you come in, you get a couple of treatments, and you are released from care until you have your next flare up then you repeat the cycle.

The second school of thought is that because the Central Nervous System Controls every organ and system in the Human body including all of the healing processes, and because the nervous system controls all to these processes, then by adjusting the spine, the Chiropractic Physician can infact help the body to cure disease as well as healing back pain and so on.  These Physicians adopt the belief system that all healing comes from the body and it is a self healing organism that when given the correct nervous function the body will heal itself…within certain limitations such as the limitation of matter.

Again….these two schools of thought are at the extreme opposites and most doctors of Chiropractic do fall somewhere in the middle.

With these  two schools of thought come two typical ways that Chiropractors will practice in treating their patients.

In the pain relief model, again the patient will come in when they hurt, get a few treatments to relieve their pain and then only come back when they are in pain.

I have personally been involved in this type of practice in my past experience and I noticed a couple of things.  Patients in this model of practice tend to end up spending more on their Chiropractic care because when they do have a flare up (which will usually happen a few times per year) they would have to come in for multiple treatments to get the pain under control again.  They would also tend to miss a lot of time from work due to disability from the pain, which again costs them more money.

The worst observation that I made in this type of practice is this….many patients that were not seen for a long time would come back in very bad shape…and here is why.  They would come in and get adjusted, their pain would go away for a given amount of time (a couple of days, weeks, or months) but inevitably the pain would come back, and so in there mind Chiropractic didn’t help them, so they would end up going the medical route.  They would try physical therapy, then steroid injections, then eventually surgery.  Then these patients would end up back in our office in severe chronic pain with permanent damage to their body from all of the medical procedures that they had undergone.

These observations made me realize that this was not the type of practice that I wanted for myself or my patients, even more, it was not the type of practice that I would want my family to go to…as these practictioners spent no time educating patients on how to be healthy, how to manage their lifestyle, and how to avoid the pitfalls of exploring the medical world for pain relief.

I was also involved in the second extreme practice model.  In this practice the physician believed that all patients should have Chiropractic care from the moment they are born until they die.  (Which I totally agree with).  So the treatment model that this practitioner used was 90 visits per year for the first year of care…for everyone….it didn’t matter if you were 2 years old or 100 years old…this is what the treatment plan was for everyone.  (Which I totally disagree with!)  This doctor had a very busy practice and in my opinion, the patient care in this practice was not sufficient.  Everyone was treated the same.

My observations from this practice model were that the majority of these patients did very well with their treatment and very few of them ever had to seek medical treatment for their conditions.  However, the negative side to this type of practice is that the patient had to follow the recommendation or they were not accepted as a patient and I feel that the majority of these patients were over treated which lead to excessive expense and time commitments.

So, with my experiences in the different types of practice, and with my experiences in the different schools, I was able to determine my paradigm for running my clinic.  I asked myself how I would want to be treated by a physician, and most importantly, who would I trust with my wife or my kids.  My answers to these questions have shaped how I practice, and what I feel to be important.

First of all, as Chiropractic Physicians, we are the most highly trained wellness physicians there are.  If you break an arm, or have a severe health emergency, then you need a medical physician.  However, when you are looking to lead a healthy life, and improve your health in the future, we are the best trained to help you do that.  We are trained extensively in the natural ways of healing the body which include body work throught the Chiropractic adjustment as well as nutritional and lifestyle training.

With our extensive training in this area, I feel that it is a mistake to not share that knowledge with our patients.

We are also highly trained phsicians in the area of pain relief….and lifestyle factors that can actually heal the source of your pain and prevent future problems.

In other words, most patients seek us out for pain relief, but we are very well trained to perform health coaching services as well.

So with that in mind…I know that some patients just want pain relief.  They dont care about lifestyle changes, they dont want to hear about nutrition, they dont have time for all of this stuff, they just want to feel better to get back to life.  But I also know that the vast majority of people want to take control of their health so that they can be there for their kids and grand kids.  So that they dont have to spend their life in pain or suffering from the many chronic diseases that can be prevented through life style.

Here is my paradigm…..I will examine you thoroughly, I will determine what is the cause of your condition.  And I will offer you the solution that best fits for you.  In otherwords, I will pull no punches, I will tell you exactly what your body needs to give you the best results.  I will tell you what it will take to get you back to a healthy, functioning body that is not just absent of pain, but truly healthy….functioning at the best of its ability, and allowing you to lead your life with as much energy and zest for life as possible.

And after I have explained these options to you, I will happily serve you and give you exactly what you want.  Whether you want a complete health program including nutrition and corrective chiropractic care…..or you just want a couple of adjustments to get symptom relief and make you feel better.  I am here for you on your terms.

I will not make you accept any treatment recommendations, but I feel it is a huge mistake and disservice to not let you know what your options are and what the outcomes of each type of care will be.

In otherwords, I am here to serve you, educate you if you want it, and help you meet your lifes challenges on your terms.

That is how I practice….and that is how I will serve you.

Fair enough?

Have a great day.

How Your Back Affects Your Neck….and Vice Versa

Have you ever wondered why when you come in the office with low back pain, occasionally you will get a neck adjustment?

Or if you come in with neck pain and you get a low back adjustment?

Or have you ever come into our office with a really bad case of low back pain….so bad that you forget to tell me that your neck is bothering you as well…only to find that after receiving your low back adjustment your neck feels better?

Have you ever wondered why this happens?

Well, the obvious answer is that everything in the body can affect everything.

Don’t take my word for it, lets look at what one of our Medical Doctor friends has to say about the subject:

“We tend to divide the examination of the spine into regions: cervical, thoracic,
and lumbar spine clinical studies.
This is a mistake.
The three units are closely interrelated structurally
and functionally – a whole person with a whole spine.
The cervical spine may be symptomatic because of a
thoracic or lumbar spine abnormality, and vice versa!
Sometimes treating a lumbar spine will relieve a
cervical spine syndrome, or proper management of
cervical spine will relieve low backache.”

So when you are hurting in a certain area, don’t think that we are crazy for examining your entire spine, and even into the extremities when we are treating you.  As many of you have learned…a lot of the time your symptom is not coming from that body part at all, but it is a referral from another seperate area of the body!

As Chiropractic Physicians we are trained in the art of searching the body for the signs that will point us in the right direction.  We utilize many different procedures such as leg checks, range of motion testing, palpation, muscle testing, and so on to figure out what is wrong with your body at this time.

We can have 10 patients walk into our office with low back pain, and find 10 different causes ranging from a foot bone that is subluxated to a misalignement in the neck, to a spasmed muscle, to any one of hundreds of possibiities  that could be causing the same symptoms in different people.

Rest assured that when you are treated, your treatment will be tailored to your body and your health challenges…for your symptoms.

Looking forward to seeing you soon,

But What About Splenda?

What I am about to tell you may very well disturb you….and shock your reality, I will get to that in a moment.

So the major diet trend over the last several years has been to avoid sugar, processed carbohydrates, and high glycemic foods.

The new trend is geared toward how these foods are leading to chronic inflammation which reeks havoc on your body, in the way of pain, allergies, food sensitivities, chronic immune diseases, weight gain, and so on and so on.

The truth is that everything that I just said is absolutely true.  One of the best health decisions that you can ever make for yourself is to cut down or completely eliminate what are called the “white trash” foods from your diet.  White rice, white sugar, and white bread (and all of the derivatives of these products).

Unfortunately, this can be very difficult to accomplish since almost all of our foods contain these products if they are processed or boxed. In other words, if you have to read the label you will probably find one of these products or a derivative of these products in the ingredients list.

What is truly scary, and may totally shock you, is that many people in an attempt to follow these health guidelines are making a health decision that is just as dangerous to your body or may even cause more damage to your body.

Due to a tremendous amount of effort by those of us in the natural health field, many of you have become aware of the dangers of artificial sweetners, and while many of you still consume them on a daily basis, millions of people have improved their health by elimiating the consumption of fake sugars like sacchrine, asulfame K, equal, sweet and low, and however many other names the manufacturers have come up with to try to hide these chemicals from you.

Well in the last few years the food industry has made a tremendously successful rebound back into the “health food” world by introducing splenda or sucralose into the market.  With a great marketing campaign stating that it is natural, it tastes like sugar because it is made like sugar, etc…millions of people have jumped back into this dangerous habit thinking that they are making a healthy food choice.

I am in fact amazed that most of the healthfood stores now adays carry “healthier” versions of normal foods that all contain splenda or sucralose.

Please understand what I am saying, this is a new assault on our health!  The product is relatively new on the market and I want you to mark my words, over the next several years, as the studies start to roll in, we will learn that this product is just as toxic to our body, if not more toxic than all of the other artificial sweetners.  This is not a “health food” but instead a toxin that is already negatively effecting the lives of millions.

Here are a few facts about this dangerous toxin:

Sucralose can cause one to suffer from sluggishness, fatigue, make legs feel like
lead weights, mood swings, severe cramps (female), intense pain, painful bowel
movements, bloating, dizziness, confusion, and more.

Seven (7) out of ten (10) American women consume sucralose daily. (Wholly Cow!)

“The artificial sweetener sucralose (Splenda) is made by binding three chlorine
atoms to a molecule of sugar. The problem: Chlorine reacts with organic material to
create chlorination by-products (CBPs) that can trigger chronic symptoms like fatigue,
headaches and brain fog, as well as reproductive and immune problems.”

“Sucralose is found in nearly 4,000 food, beverage and health-care products,
including diet drinks, ice cream, protein bars, vitamins and toothpaste.” It is also
found in gum, over-the-counter drugs, and salad dressings.

Consumer use of sucralose has grown annually by 10%.

70% of those who consume sucralose (Splenda) will have a sensitivity to it and
develop symptoms. (Do you understand the significance of this, 70% of american women use sucralose daily and 70% of those women will have symptoms due to sensitivity!)

If one is experiencing symptoms from consuming sucralose (Splenda), the
solution is to stop taking it and to “Flush Your System” as follows:
“Supplementing daily [for 2 months] with 600 mg of the amino acid N-acetyl-lcysteine
(NAC) boosts the body’s production of glutathione, according to a study in
the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine. This antioxidant
(glutathione) flushed CBPs from the body.” (You may call us at the office to get a good quality glutathione product)

If these symptoms are caused by sucralose (Splenda) sensitivity, elimination from the
diet for a minimum of 2 weeks should start to improve symptoms:
Unexplained Tiredness, Brain Fog, Nausea, Joint Pain,
Cramps/Bloating, Diarrhea, Headaches, Dizziness,
Mood Swings, Depression.

So in otherwords, it will behoove all of us to start reading our labels and avoid this toxin.  It will be listed as either splenda or sucralose on the label.  Keep in mind, that almost all gums now have artificial sweetners in them, it is very difficult to find a gum without it.

Call us if you have any questions.

Have a great day!

Small People Doing Small Things

“Small people in small places doing small things did this.”

Why have I put this quote at the top of today’s entry?  Where was this quote written?  When you find out where it was written, it will change from a group of words into an inspirational quote that will motivate you through many of your hard times.  But I will get to that in a minute.

Now you may be saying to yourself…. “Why in the world is my Chiropractor sending me information on success principles?  What the $@#@!@ does this have to do with my back pain?”

Well, let me first explain.  I am a huge student of personal developement.  I can still remember when I was in my senior year of college and got my first Anthony Robbins book, I was hooked.  I have spent the last 20 years studying personal developement.

When I read at night, these are the books I read.  When I am in the car, I rarely listen to the radio, if I am alone, I am listening to personal developement cd’s.  I do this to improve my life, my family’s life, and the lives of my patients.

You see, it is my passion to study how to make the most out of the gift that God has given us…. our life.  Whether I am studying time tested principles of success and health and wellness, or diving into the new theories and discoveries of biochemistry, physical medicine, endocrinology, or what ever new information is out there, it is for one purpose….to try to improve the world around me.

I see our time on this earth as being one of the most amazing times to be alive….Yes I agree, there are a lot of challenges…but when else in History have we had so much opportunity to learn and so much opportunity to be involved with so many people across the entire world, with just the click of a button?  This is truly an amazing time to be alive.

One of the challenges that has come with our society, however, is that we have become a society of instant gratification, instant results, speed….speed….speed.  Just look at all of the advertising, lose 30 lbs in 30 days!  Get your tax refund today!  Heck, we don’t even have to wait for a letter any more!

The problem with many of these stories of instant gratification and “overnight successes” is that no one ever sees the work that went into these successes.  And the truth is, if there wasnt any work involved, the successes don’t last.

For example, there are many weightloss programs and products on the market.  I have watched many patients go through these and lose weight rapidly….30,40,50 lbs in just a couple of short months, but because a solid foundation was never set through lifestyle changes, whenever they got off of their miracle product or miracle medicine, there wait always returns.

Business owners who jump into a business and have immediate success…but never had to lay a foundation of strenght through failures and struggles will usually end up failing in the long run, as soon as hard times hit, because they will not have the foundation to stand on to fight the hard times.

I know, you are thinking… “ok Doc,  you are rambling…get to the point!”

I know that what I am about to say doesn’t apply to you personally :), but I bet you know someone it applies to.

The point is this, the people that we love around us have chosen to live a lifetime of small poor choices such as poor diet, poor posture, not getting enough sleep, “stinking thinking”, no exercise, and not maintaining a healthy nervous system through regular Chiropractic adjustments.  These small choices, made on a daily basis have led our country into the healthcare crisis that we are currently facing.  The individuals have become victims to the “speed game.”  They  have moved from natural time tested principles in which you have to “do the work” to help your body heal….instead to the mindset that there is a pill, potion or a lotion to fix anything.

You have instead fallen pray to the bombardment of instant gratification messages.  Our bodies are fabulous self healing organisms…but we have to do the work, if not, if we look for quick fixes (diet pills, the newest miracle “juice”, toxic medications, steroid injections, surgeries, etc) we will not have the foundation to build our health on, and our health will crumble.

This is why I send you messages of personal developement and success principles, because I want to change our community and I cannot do it alone.  We have to first take responsibility for ourselves, then for our family, then move ourselves into our community.

BJ Palmer used to say “You never know how far something you do or say today may effect the lives of millions tomorrow”

I want us to build a community of leaders and healers, one person at a time…and watch the miracles unfold.  Please share these posts with your friends and families and lets build a stronger tomorrow….together…one person at a time.
