Quick Rundown On Nutrition

Hello Everyone,

So over the last several emails we have been talking about lifestyle factors that can help us lead a healthier and happier life.

Today’s discussion will ironically be very brief….ironic because of the fact that nutrition is such a detailed subject, hundreds of books and thousands of pages of information are out there for you to research.   Well today I am going to condense it down.  Here it goes.

1.  Eat as many whole foods as possible.  Foods that are the way that God created them, foods found in nature.  (If a food has an ingredients list then it is probably not a whole food)
2.  Eat at least 5 fruits and 5 vegetables per day.
3.  Eat protein, but it doesn’t have to be a large portion of your meal.  The size of your palm should be enough.
4.  Eat wild salmon, not farm raised.
5.  Eat BUTTER!  Not margarine!  Eat no partially hydrogenated oils…they are poison and should be pulled from the market.
6.  Do not eat artificial sweatners…sacharine, asulfame K, sucralose, splenda, aspartame, etc…again, a whole seperate class of poison.
7.  Eat organic as often as possible.
8.  Water is the only true “drink”  all other beverages are liquid “food” and should be considered accordingly.

These are just some general ideas.  Try to completely avoid 5 and 6.  Other than that, whenever you do finally decide to eat a meal…even if it isnt healthy or not on your “diet”, eat it with gratitude.  Be thankful for the nutrition you are receiving.  Being stressed, feeling guilty, and beating yourself up will affect your digestion.  Own your decision and be grateful for the food.

Have a great day!

Take our 21 Day Challenge

Hello Everyone,

Today I want to discuss one of my favorite ways of maintaining a healthy lifestyle…exercise.

Man, in the real world, without quoting all of the studies and all of the health “benefits” of exercise, I  have to tell you that there are very few things (aside from getting adjusted regularly) that will make you feel better quicker.

If you are feeling depressed, lethargic, don’t like how you look, or stressed and anxious then you need to start a good exercise program today.

Now I admit that beginning a program is difficult, it is hard to overcome the inertia of not working out, and the first few days of working out can be a little miserable with the soreness and all, but once you get passed that first week you will love your workouts.

So what pointers can I give you about starting a good exercise program?  Well, here are a couple:

1. The most common mistake that I see almost every day is that when people start to work out they dive in 100% and way over do it.  This can lead to major soreness and quite often injuries.  If you are just starting a workout program, start slow.  A simple 15 minute walk per day mixed in with 5-10 minutes of resistance training is plenty to start.  You can even alternate days on those if it makes it easier.  The important thing is to start doing something each day.

2. I have learned in my experiences and studies that it takes 21 days to develope a habit.  So, the way that I like to encourage patients to begin an exercise program is to start with a maximum of 15 minutes for 21 days straight.  (The exception to the 15 min maximum is if you are walking, then you can go up to 30 minutes, but again, keep the time convenient, it is very important to do some form exercise for 21 days in a row.)

3. When you are first starting out, the goal is activity. The goal is developing the habit. The goal is not to see how sore you can get.  Just do some sort of exercise for up to 15 minutes for 21 days.  If you do not get sore, that is ok.

4. Incorporate cardio exercise (walking, biking, swimming etc) and every other day ad in resistence exercise.  You don’t need a gym or dumbells.  I highly recommend bodylastics home gym systems, you can get started for around $45 and do over 100 exercises using the systems.  You can get one here:  http://www.bodylastics.com/1413.html

5. Remember the goal is not to be sore.  At some point during the 21 days you will start to crave your next workout.  This is when you know you have arrived.  Still finish out your 21 days with light exercise, then once you have developed the habit you can begin doing a more intense exercise program.

Alright, set a goal, start your 21 days as soon as possible.

In fact, I have an idea.  I challenge all of you who are having difficulty getting back into exercising to start a 21 day challenge with me on Monday May 2, 2011.

Go to http://www.bodylastics.com/1413.html and get a home gym system, again they start at $45 so it is not expensive.  Starting on Monday May 2, 2010 I will daily post a brief workout for everyone to perform for 21 days straight.

Lets all develope the habit of exercising!

Go ahead and order your resistance bands today so that you can make sure that they are deliverd by May 2 for the 21 day challenge.

Have a great day guys!

And Finally…We Have To Be- Healthy

Hello Everyone,

Good morning.  Well, today will be the last “way of being” discussion.

To be honest, I have saved the best for last.

We all know that you can have the greatest of intentions, but if you don’t have the vehicle to deliver those intentions, it all goes for nothing.

For example, you intend to be there for someone you care about…an important recital, or a birthday celebration, or anything special… and you get in your car to go, and sure enough the car won’t start.  Come to find out you haven’t maintained your car.  You haven’t changed the oil, filled it up with gas, checked the tires, and before you know it your car won’t take you anywhere.  Now you are stuck, unable to contribute to anyone.

Well, the same goes true for your body.  So the final way of being is “Being Healthy”

So how do we define health?  The definition of health is “Optimal Physical, Mental, and Social well being, not just the abscence of disease or infermity.”

I had a conversation with someone close to me a few years ago who was giving me a hard time for our lifestyle choices (we tend to do things differently then everyone else, in case you haven’t noticed 🙂  and she was telling me that it was ridiculous all of the things we were doing…I mean…look at her, she didn’t do any of those things and she was “healthy”

Now I am not one to confront someone who is not interested help, so I let her comment slide…but I found her definition of “healthy” to be interesting.  You see, she had recently had her gall bladder removed, a hysterectomy, was very over weight, and had just spent several days in the hospital after suffering from a mersa infection….all of this after just being diagnosed with a degenerative eye condition.

So what did she mean by health?  She meant “right now I don’t have any symptoms”

So based on the definition above, the absence of symptoms is not enough to define health, we have to have all three factors…optimal physical, mental and social well being.

So how do we acheive this?  To make it simple, we focus on 5 areas of our lives.

1.  Get proper and adequate exercise
2.  Eat a healthy and whole food diet
3.  Maintain a positive mental attitude
4.  Get good high quality and adequate rest.
5.  Maintain a healthy nervous system through regular Chiropractic adjustments.

I will go over each of these lifestyle factors over the next 5 articles.

Have a great day!

Your Future’s So Bright…You Gotta Wear Shades

Hello Everyone,

Happy Monday.

Today I wanted to talk about a way of being that can be difficult at times, especially when we are in the middle of a recession and facing all of the challenges that are going on in the world today.

Last week we talked about Gratitude and Being Grateful, which is critical.  Today I want to talk about taking that Gratitude and applying it to the future…to give you a sense of Optimisim….in other words…I feel that it is very important to be “optimistic.”

Last week we talked about taking your focus away from all of the negatives, and turning off the news, and letting yourself focus on the good things in your life….and being greatful for them.

Well the same is true of optimism.  It is very important to understand that fear is a great motivator.  And in a society motivated by money, fear is one of the key ways to generate revenue.  So most media and almost all news out there is designed to make us fear a possible thing that may occur in the future.

Try to not watch the news for just a period of 30 days.  You will feel disconnected especially if you are addicted to the 24 hour news stations.  You will feel lost.  So what you will need to do is fill that time watching and reading inspiring books.

As they say “Garbage in, Garbage out!”  If you fill your mind with all of the bad stuff out there, that is what you may end up experiencing, at least in your mind, as you live the fears.

But….if you instead read inspiring books….read The Bible, read books written by Wallace D. Wattles, read books written by Anthony Robbins…..etc, there are so many books out there and so many sources of powerful and uplifting messages that you will have no choice but to invision a future of hope and happiness.

When you spend your day knowing that all of the turmoil that you are experiencing in your life today is simply god giving you the challenges to develope you so you will be an improved and more powerful person tomorrow, so you will be better able to contribute to the world tomorrow, you will realize that everything is about growth.

You can then take that same realization and apply it to society and realize that a recession/depression is nothing more than a cleansing.  That everything is cyclical and our society will continue to grow in a positive direction.  That a threatened government shutdown is a necessary pain for the country to get its spending under control…to get our country into a better financial future.

I don’t know the grand plan….none of us do…but I do know that I have seen over and over again, especially in my life and the lives of my patients that personal challenges will almost always let a person come out of the back end as a stronger person, who is better able and more confident to handle life and contribut to those around them.

As a very basic example….at the age of 24 I herniated a disc in my lower back and ended up having back surgery.  I was told that I would never play sports again or ride a bike again or jog again etc….  Instead that one challenge in my life, which was devistating to me at the time…changed my life and put me on a completely different life path which 16 years later ( I am a slow learner LOL!) landed me in Chiropractic school…which has allowed me to help thousands of people improve their health.

We are all here for a purpose….we are all growing towards our best selves.  We were taught in church this weekend…”Without God we can’t….Without us he won’t”

In otherwords, if you don’t have faith in a brighter future, it doesn’t matter what blessings or opportunities come your way…if you belief that we are all “going to hell in a handbasket” you will miss the opportunities and live a life or mediocrity and dispair.

However, if you believe you are here for a purpose…then read inspiring books….and trust that your life is going somewhere and ask yourself “What can I learn from the challenges that I face today that will make me a better person for tomorrow?”  Learn the lesson, become better, and move to a bright and fulfilling future.

Sorry for rambling on today, but this is a very important subject.

Go for it today…live a life of hope…inspire those around you by your words and actions.

Have a great day!

Do You Want More? Be Grateful!

Hello Everyone,

I have talked about today’s subject many times.  It is so very important to help us keep our positive mental attitude.

The quality that I am talking about is the quality and habit of being grateful.

I was talking to a patient yesterday and she was talking about how much she loved the Easter time of year because everyone was so grateful for everything around them.  As she was talking I could see her face light up, it was a really neat conversation to be a part of.

Sometimes when life gets tough or stress gets to us, we start to feel very negative….and the best way that I know of is to get grateful, and when you start focusing on the incredible blessings that you have in your life, it will totally turn around your mindset.

Think about this in simple terms.  If you give a child one scoop of ice cream and the child starts nagging and asking for a second scoop of ice cream or starts crying because the scoop isnt big enough…how likely are you to want to give the child more ice cream?

But what if you give the child one scoop of ice cream and the child looks at you with complete sincerity and says… ” Thank you so much, this ice cream is so yummy!”

Wouldn’t you want to give the second child more ice cream, even without them asking?  (My kids have figured this one out!)

So if you feel like you need more money in your life, more health in your life, more love in your life…the first step to getting it is to be grateful.  Be grateful for your next paycheck, or the next penny that you find on the ground, stop and give a moment of thanks.

I have shot a video on a technique that I like to use to help get into a state of gratitude, you can see it here:

Be “Curious”

Hello Everyone,

Ok, now that the floors are on track we can get back on subject.  If you remember, last week we were talking about the “ways of being” for people who were successful and happy.

Last week we talked about “being present”, “being certain/confident”, and “being attractive (and repulsive)”.

Today is a trait that if you can master will change your life.  Today it is all about “being curious”

What do I mean by curious?

Basically, curious about those around you.  We have all heard the saying “seek first to understand”

Well what does that mean?  Curiousity leads to affinity.  When we try to communicate with people in our lives it is important to show up “empty”  Let all of your stuff go…empty your mind and heart of all judgements and opinions and try to understand the other person’s world view, and point of view.

When you can do that, when you can try to understand the other persons point of view, you will have affinity.  Once you have an affinity with someone, you can begin to share a common reality with them…and once that happens….you have a true communication, and out of true communication comes a real relationship.

Try it tomorrow.  Show up empty and see how your communication goes.

Have a great night!
