The Marshmallow Study

Hello Everyone,

How can Marshmallow’s predict your psychology and your future health?

Walther Mischel began a study in the 1960’s called the Stanford Marshmallow Study.  Walter Mischel was a Stanford University Psychology

researcher and studied the importance of self discipline on future success.

In the marshmallow study, a group of 4 year olds was offered a choice.  They could have one marshmallow now.  But if they waited for 15

or 20 minutes while the researcher ran an errand they could have two marsmallows.

1/3 of the children immediately took the one marshmallow.  While some waited a little longer, they still ended up taking their

marshmallow before the instructor returned.  The final third of the children waited the full 15 to 20 minutes for the adult to return.

Later, when the children graduated from high school, a follow up study was done.  What they found was very interesting.  The impatient

marsmallow eaters were less self confident and couldnt put off immediate gratification to receive the two marshmallows were mer

productive and positive in life.  By being able to delay gratification in pursit of thier goals they had higher incomes, more lasting

marriages and better health.

The problem is that in our society, through speed of technology and advertising speed is encouraged.

When it comes to our health, speed is something that will usually end up hurting us in the long run.

Quick weight loss programs that allow more than 1-2 pound of weightloss on average per week usually have no long term benifit.  In fact,

most people who undergo “medical weightloss” or other quick low calorie diet programs never develope the proper habits and end up

rebounding to a weight that was more than their original weight, before beginning the diet.

Pain relief is another huge area of health that can be detrimental to your health.  Yes you can take an advil for immediate relief, or a

loritab, or a vicodin, or a darvocet…or what ever the pill of the day is.  But unfortunately the health effects of these are very

detrimental, from addiction to liver damage to death from gastrointestinal bleeds and liver failure.

This is why I have such a high level of respect for all of our chiropractic patients and those of you involved in our massage program.

You have chosen to go after the cause of your problem and fix it, even if there is not immediate gratification.  You have proven that

you are willing to “put in the work” for long term health.

And believe me, I trust that your health is not the only area of your life that you will be successful in.

Here is to you, and your self discipline.

Have a great day!
