Car Accidents Cause Chronic Pain

Good Morning Everyone,

Today’s article will have a little bit of a different tone….

You see, I need your help.

There is a hidden injury out there that causes what I would say are the majority of the chronic pain that I treat in my office.

That hidden injury is untreated car accident injuries.

Most people follow one of two  paths after they have been in a car accident.

The first path is they are in a car accident, they don’t feel any pain immediately after the accident and then as time goes on they start to experience chronic symptoms that get gradually worse but since they didn’t hurt immediately after the car accident they don’t think that the pain is from the car accident, so they don’t get treatment.

The second path is that they do experience pain immediately, end up in the emergency room or their doctor’s office…get xrays taken and they have no broken bones.  They are then sent home with pain pills and muscle relaxers and are told that they are fine, will be sore for a couple of days but nothing to worry about.  Then when the pain either continues or comes back and gets progressively more chronic they don’t attribute it to the car accident because they were told that they were fine.

Either way, it is very common for symptoms from a traumatic injury like a car accident (even a low speed car accident that doesn’t cause much damage to your car) to begin to show up and become chronic months or even in some cases years after the accident.  This is when the patient ends up in our office…and they are much more difficult to help once they have healed incorrectly and their body has developed scar tissue and adhesions in the muscles…not to mention the dreaded arthritis and spinal degeneration.

So how can you help?  The average person knows and has influence over 52 people.  An average of 1 in 4 people are involved in motor vehicle accidents.  In the longest study ever performed on whiplash-injured patients (a study looking at the health status 17 years after injury), 55% of the patients still suffered from pain caused by the original trauma.(Accident Analysis and Prevention, 2002).  That means that each of you know approximately 13 people who have been involved in a car accident and 7 of them are at risk of still being in pain 17 years from now if they are not treated.

Keep your ears out.  If you hear of anyone who has been involved in a car accident, no matter how minor, have them call us at 862-2224 so that we can give them our complimentary “Hidden Car Accident Injury Evaluation” at no charge.  If we can’t help them, we will refer them to the people who can.

Thank you for your help.

Have a great day and drive safe.
