How Your Back Pain Gets Worse Over Time

Why It Is Important To Maintain Your Results

Good Morning Everyone,

In the past several articles we have been discussing the treatment options for sufferers of low back pain.  We discussed how the treatments that you choose can be a life and death situation, and we also discussed the options that are available should you chose to go the medical route or the natural chiropractic structural repair route.

In todays article, the last of the series, I want to talk with you about what to do after the fact.  With this article, I am speaking under the asssumption that you have successfully treated your low back pain (more than likely taking the structural chiropractic or non surgical decompression approach).

Once you have successfully completed your active treatment plan, you will be best served if you enter into and keep up with a “maintenance program”

You see, once you have an injury in your spine, especially if it is an injury that has been allowed to become chronic (a long term condition) then the injury itself tends to be a weak point in the body.

If you will remember from previous articles, the law of entropy applies to the body.  The law of entropy states that the natural direction of the state of things in the universe is towards chaos.  In other words, anything that we do not pay attention to will tend to fall apart. Your car, your marriage, your health, your business, anything that does not get your attention and you are not actively trying to improve will move towards disrepair.

So with your body, if you begin to stop focusing on your health, your body will begin to fall in disrepair.  So what do you think are the first areas to begin to go into disrepair?  That is right, areas of previous injury, or weakness in your body.  So the tendency of your body is that your low back, because it is an area of weakness, will begin down the same path that you just went through.

So how do you maintain your state of correction from your low back pain treatment?  You follow the five principles of health:  1.  Plenty of rest, 2.  Positive mental attitude, 3.  Proper healthy diet, 4.  Proper exercise, 5.  Regular Chiropractic treaments to maintain your nervous system.  With low back pain, the last two are critical.  You must strengthen your spine and maintain your results with regular adjustments.

*****Special Note**** As proof of the body’s tendency to follow the law of entropy, and another reason to avoid surgery if possible…lets look at my spine.  At the age of 24 years old I had a lumbar laminectomy at L5-S1.  As far as surgeries are concerned, this is a pretty mild spinal surgery.  No fusion.  No Plates.  No screws.  My symptomatic results have been good.  I have worked hard to maintain the results with regular exercise and chiropractic care.   If you look at my xrays of my spine, my spine is in perfect condition.  My discs are all great, my bones have no degeneration, no arthritis, etc….my entire spine looks great, except for L5-S1.  My L5-S1 joint is degenerated, my disc is very thin, and I have bone spurs and arthritis beginning to form in the area?  Why?  Because of the surgery.  Because of the trauma caused by the surgery.  Because the surgery interfered with the bodies natural healing processes, and therefore made my spine weaker in that one joint.  In order for me to keep up my healthy and busy lifestyle, it is critical for me to “maintain” this area, and I do, regular adjustments and regular exercise.

If you or anyone you know is suffering from low back pain, give me a call.  I will be more than happy to sit down and discuss treatment options.

Have a great day!

Natural Low Back Treatments

Hello Everyone,

In the last few articles we have been discussing the causes and challenges of low back pain in the lives of those of you who are suffering from this common and often debiltating condition.

We have discussed the common causes of low back pain and the medical options for treatment.

Today I will discuss the preferred treatment methods and the preferred treatment order.

So the preferred treatment order for lowback pain would be this:  1. Chiropractic (sometimes combined with massage therapy and nutritional supplementation).  2.  Decompression Therapy (used for chronic conditions or more severe conditions such as bulging discs, sciatica, stenosis, and degenerative joint disease).  3.  Pain medication (for short term use only and only if it wont resolve naturally). 4.  Pain management and surgery (only to be used as last resort due to all of the dangers involved)

The reason that we start with Chiropractic care is because it is save, natural, addresses the actual cause of back pain (abnormal or misplaced structure and function putting pressure on a nerve).  There are very few side effects and this is in my humble opinion the most logical and cost effective solution.

Decompression is extremely successful in treating chronic low back pain.  We have had significant success in helping people who had let their condition go to far to respond to chiropractic alone.  Chronic and painful conditions such as bulging discs, stenosis and degenerative joint disease.  The reason we do not start with decompression in most cases is not because of danger, but instead because of cost as it can be more expensive than Chiropractic care alone.  *****Special note****IF YOU HAVE RECEIVED CHIROPRACTIC CARE IN THIS OFFICE OR IN ANOTHER OFFICE AND YOUR LOW BACK PAIN HAS NOT RESPONDED AS YOU WISH, BEFORE BEGINNING THE MEDICAL TREATMENTS, CALL OUR OFFICE AND WE WILL SEE IF YOU ARE A CANDIDATE FOR DECOMPRESSION THERAPY.  WE WILL NOT CHARGE YOU FOR THIS INITIAL CONSULTATION.  THIS OFFER IS EXTENDED TO YOUR FRIENDS AND FAMILY!

In my experience, these two treatments will take care of up to 95-98% of low back pain cases.  On rare occasion we will have to refer you out to a medical doctor, but I do emphasize, this is only on very rare occasion.

If you or anyone that you know is suffering from low back pain, get into the office as soon as possible. There is no need to suffer.  And remember my story versus Mary’s story.  Your decisions on how to treat your low back pain could end up being life and death!

Have a great day!

Medical Options For Low Back Pain

Hello Everyone,

In yesterday’s article we discussed the causes of low back pain.

I would like to say that yesterday’s article was a simplistic cause of low back pain.  There can be many other more serious causes of low back pain such as Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm, Prostate Cancer, Kidney Stones/Infect just to name a few.

So it is important not only from a degeneration point of view but also from a general sytemic health point of view to get yourself checked and find out the cause of your pain.  If it is something that I as a Chiropractor cannot help, I will make sure to help you get to the right professional.

Now, today I want to talk about the medical treatments available for low back pain.

To be honest with you, unless you have an emergency (such as some of the causes just mentioned) then there is not a whole lot that medicine has to offer for low back pain.

You see, as I mentioned in yesterday’s article, most of the time low back pain is a structural issue, that if caught early enough can be fixed with natural methods.

The first step for medicine is to offer pain medications, muscle relaxers, and anti-inflammatories.   A chemical treatment for a structural problem.  So these meds “may” make you feel better but they are dangerous for a few reasons:

1.  All medications have side effects.  Many of these meds are toxic to the liver, stomach, and even heart (as you have seen with Cox II inhibitors were pulled from the market for causing heart attacks).  Yes, even tylenol, as I demonstrated in Mary’s story.  NSAIDs (Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatorys) cause 16500 deaths per year do to Gastrointestinal bleeding.  The truth is, your body can handle some of these meds in the short term.  But even after the first dose you are causing damage somewhere in your body, so long term use (more than a couple of days) should be avoided at all cost!
2.  Many of these medications are addictive, which will ad a whole new challenge to your life.
3.  When you take these meds, they fix nothing!  They simply mask your body’s natural warning system that lets you know there is a problem and you need to fix it.  It is like your oil light in your car.  You see your oil light and decide to just cover the light with tape.  This is like taking meds to cover the symptom.  What will happen to your car?  Major engine damage.  What will happen to your body?  Major joint and soft tissue damage.  This damage occurs from not fixing the injury so beginning the process of degeneration and also because when you mask the pain you will probably go and do things that you couldnt do without the meds that will cause even more damage to the joint.

After you have tried the meds, and the pain has not gone away, you will typically be sent to physical therapy or pain management.

Physical therapy will focus on some stretching and exercises.  This may help you feel better in the short term but PT’s are not trained to remove subluxations and therefore restoring normal spinal joint function.  Thereby again leaving the original injury in the spine to begin the degeneration process.

****A Warning About Physical Therapy****  Many physical therapists are beginning to take weekend classes to learn how to “manipulate” patients.  Be very careful of this.  As chiropractors we trained for 4 years to learn how to identify and remove subluxations scientifically and specifically from the spine.  There is no way you can learn this in a weekend seminar.  That is the equivelant of me, as a chiropractor, taking a weekend seminar to learn how to prescribe medications.  Dangerous and likely to cause more injury than good.  Be careful if a PT or a massage therapists (absolutely no training in manipulation) or even an MD tries to “pop your spine”  I have seen many injuries from these practices.

The next option is pain management.  Sometimes necessary but very scary in my opinion.  As the name implies, this treatment is “management” of pain…there is really no solution offered here.  Pain management includes treatments such as steroid injections, pain pills, burning of nerves, and so on.  The challenge here is that all of the treatments cause further damage to the body.  We already discussed pain pills, steroid injections are usually temporary relief at all and need to be done over and over and can cause conditions such as osteoporosis, avascular necrosis, and so on.  The damage caused by neuroablasion (burning of a nerve) are obvious.

The final option is surgery.  The New England Journal of medicine released statistics that 51% of all back surgeries are actually unnecessary.  There is a time and a place for surgery.  And in fact, this is really the only structural solution for the structural problem that medicine has to offer.  There is absolutely a time and a place for surgery.  However, surgery absolutely must be the last option.  Once you have surgery, you have a ton of complications that can take you down the slippery slope that I mentioned in Mary’s story (multiple surgeries).  Surgery causes scar tissue and the surgery itself causes tissue damage.  If a fusion is thrown into the mix then there is a whole new set of complications.  The worse thing that happens with surgery is that a patient gets surgery, the pain doesn’t go away, and actually ends up worse because on top of the original problem, you now have scar tissue and tissue damage which can be permanent.  This is why it is important to try all natural treatment options before beginning the medical path, because each treatment ads new complications to the process.

In tomorrow article I will show you the best treatment options for low back pain, and the order in which to do them.

Have a great day!

What Causes Low Back Pain

Hello Everyone,

So you have seen how your choices about how you deal with your Low Back pain can actually be a life or death choice.

There are basically two choices when dealing with low back pain (or any condition for that matter)….one is the choice of covering up

the symptom, overriding the body’s natural warning system, and suppressing the pain.

The other is identifying the cause of the pain, applying the appropriate treatment to take care of that cause, and move the body in the

direction of health so that you actually come out stronger and better able to handle physical, mental and emotional stresses.

So what is the cause of low back pain?  Well, in my experience I have found that Low Back pain generally follows a pattern of

progression.  The first thing that happens is that there is typically a stressor, either physical, chemical or emotional that causes a

“subluxation” in the low back.

What this means is that the low back joints in the spine get “locked” in an incorrect position.  This causes a decrease in the motion of

the joint and can cause stress on the soft tissue around the joint.  By soft tissue I mean muscles, ligaments, and possibly nerves.

If this condition is not corrected, then the abnormal wear and tear on the low back joint will begin to cause the disc to weaken and

this begins the process known as Degenerative Joint Disease (DJD).  Many time this is referred to as arthritis and is believed to be a

normal process of aging.  Let me tell you from experience, this is not a normal process of aging.  It is a common process of aging, but

not a normal process.  I have seen many individuals in their later years with very healthy spines who have lived a live of excellent

spinal hygeine (regular adjustments, exercise, nutrition, etc).

So as this DJD continues to advance, you will begin to see conditions such as bulging discs, herniated discs, ruptured discs, stenosis,

sciatica, etc….

Eventually this low back degeneration…if allowed to go on long enough, will end up causing enough damage that natural methods are no

longer a viable option.

One thing to recognize, in most cases, low back pain is a “structural” issue.  In other words abnormal structure leading to abnormal

function.  Low back pain is not usually a “chemical” issue.

So what are the options that are available to fix low back pain….(cliffhanger)  I will let you know in tomorrow’s article.

Have a great day.

Low Back Pain- It’s All About Choice

Hello Everyone,

This quote sums up the path that each of our lives have taken:

” Thus strangely are our souls constructed, and by such slight ligaments are we bound to prosperity or ruin.”  Mary Shelley- Frankenstein

In this quote, Mary Shelley is referring to ligaments as the choices that we make in our lives.

Think about it, our choices have brought us to where we are today.

Are you overweight?  Your choices have brought you there.  Healthy people make different choices than unhealthy people.

Wealthy people make different choices than people who live in poverty.

Happy families make different choices than dysfunctional families.

In this article I would like to focus on health, and more specifically low back heath.

You see, low back health is a major issue in our society.  Low back pain is one of the top three reasons that people miss work and visit their physicians.

Over the next few articles I am going to discuss different causes of low back pain, and different choices in how to treat low back pain.

Keep an eye on your inbox, but for know, think about it, do you suffer low back pain?  What choices have you made with regards to treatment of that low back pain?

Until next time,
